John Fryer adds: This is my last time running the Hope Valley Competition.  I’m approaching a land-mark Birthday (80!) and am gradually cutting down on activities, including some chess, in line with family hopes and expectations!  I have been running this event for 20 years, since 1997, at which point it would have folded after the closure of the Hope Valley club at Hathersage, when Roger Hoole and colleagues had to cease running this always popular evening. Some of our more senior members will remember it at the Scotsman’s Pack, Hathersage.

Anyone interested in taking it on in May 2018 should contact me.  If there is to be no continuation, the trophy will be retained by this year’s winner who, according to my records, has won it more often than anyone else.  I’m hopeful there is a club or someone in our chess community who will be prepared to secure the future of this 5 minute event.  Names please!
